What to Pack for Your Diving Trip to Grand Cayman: A Complete Checklist

Planning a diving trip to Grand Cayman is exciting, but knowing what to pack can feel less straightforward, especially if you’re new to dive travel. The good news is that our island is well set up for visiting divers. Leading operators like Tortuga Divers, as well as our sister companies Red Sail Sports and Rum Point Club, provide everything you need once you arrive.

Packing well simply means you’ll feel more comfortable, confident, and ready to enjoy Grand Cayman’s warm water, clear visibility, and spectacular reef and wall dives, be they East End diving tours or experiences elsewhere in the place we call home.

This guide covers the practical items to bring, what you can rent, and the essentials that make a Cayman dive holiday run smoothly.

Why Packing Right Matters for Grand Cayman Diving

Grand Cayman is known for reliable conditions, warm tropical water, and easy access to world-class dive sites. The East End, home of Tortuga Divers, offers some of our island’s best-preserved dive spots and uncrowded reefs.

Whether you’re joining a multi-day dive package or planning some fun dives between beach days, having the right kit or easy access to high-quality rental gear makes everything simpler. This is especially true for first-time visitors and inexperienced divers, who understandably have questions and concerns about what to bring and what to leave at home.

Essential Travel Documents and Admin for Grand Cayman Diving Trips

Before thinking about masks or wetsuits, make sure you have your travel essentials sorted:

  • Passport and travel insurance: Check your passport validity and bring proof of travel insurance. Ensure that your policy covers scuba diving.
  • Dive certification: Bring your certification card or digital proof. You’ll need it for any certified dive.
  • Medical notes (if required): Some courses or programmes require a doctor’s clearance if you answer “yes” to any medical questions. Bring any relevant paperwork to avoid delays.

Keeping these items in a waterproof folder or pouch is helpful for boat days or when moving between resorts. Are you still deciding where to stay during your time here? We recommend reading our blog Is East or West Better When Diving in Grand Cayman? for some local advice.

Core Dive Gear: What to Bring to Grand Cayman and What to Rent

If you’re new to diving, don’t feel pressured to buy a full set of equipment. Tortuga Divers provides high-quality rental gear, and our team will help you pick sizes and adjust everything properly.

There are a few items, however, that many divers prefer to bring:

  • Dive Mask – A well-fitting mask can make a big difference, especially if you’re still building confidence underwater. Bringing your own ensures you’re comfortable from the first dive.
  • Snorkel – Optional but useful for snorkelling trips or surface swims. However, with our snorkel rentals in Grand Cayman, you leave yours at home and save some suitcase space!
  • Wetsuit or Dive Skin – Water temperatures in Grand Cayman are warm, and many divers use a shorty or rash vest for comfort and sun protection. If you tend to get cold quickly, bringing your own layer is sensible.
  • Dive Computer – Most divers like to have their own computer for tracking depth, time, and surface intervals. It’s not essential if you prefer to rent (which we offer), but it’s a handy piece of personal kit.
  • Fins and Booties – Tortuga Divers has a wide range of fins available to rent, but if you prefer a specific fit or style and you have the space to pack them, you’re welcome to bring your own.

Just keep in mind that Tortuga Divers provides tanks, weights, and a weight belt on every dive at no extra charge, and all other equipment (including top-quality Aqualung gear) is available for rent at an additional cost. We inspect all our equipment every three months and carry out a full service once a year.

If you bring your own equipment, we have locker facilities for you to store it.

Protective Clothing for Your Grand Cayman Vacation

Even experienced divers underestimate how strong the Cayman sun can be. Much of your time with us will be spent on a dive boat or in the water, so simple sun protection goes a long way.

As such, we recommend you bring:

  • A rash vest or UV top
  • A lightweight wetsuit if you get cold easily
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Sunglasses and a cap or sun hat
  • Light long-sleeve clothing for surface intervals and boat rides

Reef-safe sunscreen is important. Cayman’s reefs are healthy and vibrant, and choosing an environmentally friendly product supports local conservation efforts highlighted in island dive briefings. Safety and Personal Dive Accessories for Your Grand Cayman Trip

Of course, packing for a dive vacation is personal, and what needs to go in a suitcase will differ from person to person. But we have found that these small items often make diving more convenient and help you stay organised throughout your trip:

  • Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) – A basic SMB is a useful personal safety item if you have one. It’s especially helpful for drift dives or when surfacing away from the boat.
  • Logbook – If you keep a logbook, remember to pack it. Grand Cayman’s varied sites include walls, coral gardens, and swim-throughs, all of which make for nice entries.
  • Mesh Gear Bag – Useful for transporting your kit to and from the boat. These bags are also great for keeping gear together in your suitcase during travel.
  • Dry Bag – Ideal for phones, wallets, and anything you want to keep dry on the ride out or during your own adventures in Grand Cayman.
  • Basic First-Aid Items – A few plasters, blister pads, and motion sickness tablets are sensible additions.

Clothing and Casual Wear for Grand Cayman Stays

Grand Cayman has a broadly relaxed vibe, especially in the East End. Lightweight clothing, swimwear, and sandals are all you need for most days. Evenings are warm, but a light layer is useful for breezy nights or air-conditioned restaurants.

You can also pick up clothing and accessories from leading names like Quicksilver, Tommy Bahama, Roxy, LaBlanca, Ralph Lauren, Elan, Gretchen Scott, Beach Lunch Lounge, and Lulu in one of Red Sail Sports’ retail locations across Grand Cayman. On our side of the island, these include Waves at Morritt’s Tortuga Club and Resort and The Treasure Chest at Rum Point Club.

Families, couples, and solo travellers often stay in the East End for its quieter, laid-back atmosphere. If you plan to explore the rest of our island on non-dive days, the beaches and restaurants around Seven Mile Beach and Rum Point make for easy day trips for anyone with their own car.

Non-Diving Essentials for Grand Cayman Trips

Finally, these few practical extras help round out your packing:

  • Reusable water bottle
  • Travel adapters for type A and B outlets (120v)
  • Toiletries and after-sun lotion
  • Lightweight, quick-dry towel
  • A book or e-reader for surface intervals and beach time

None of these items takes up much space, and they all help make your trip more comfortable.
