What the PADI Longevity Award Means for Red Sail Sports Grand Cayman
The PADI (Professional Association of Dive Instructors) Longevity Award recognises dive centres and resorts that have maintained active membership and upheld high standards for many years. Red Sail Sports has held a PADI membership since the day it opened its doors with two dive boats and a small but enthusiastic staff.
PADI Regional Manager Mike Kurczewski presented the award to Red Sail Sports Operations Manager Rod McDowall.
“Just from a longevity standpoint, it is quite an accomplishment,” said Kurczewski, who has been serving PADI dive centres and resorts in the Cayman Islands for 17 years. “To be able to be in business today in light of the economy, 9/11, and other challenges; to survive all that is a testament to their business acumen.”
McDowall says there are many reasons for Red Sail Sports’ resiliency through the ups and downs of global economics and natural disasters.
“We have adjusted to industry needs, embraced changes and innovations, been flexible and professional; we have maintained quality customer service and equipment for more than a quarter of a century,” he said. “But none of that could have been achieved without exceptional staff at all levels who have made the company what it is today. Through the years, they have given hundreds of thousands of guests and families memorable vacation experiences.”
This PADI accolade is awarded only to members who demonstrate unwavering commitment to training and education. The first recognition comes after five years of membership; reaching the 25-year milestone puts Red Sail Sports in a select group of operators globally acknowledged by PADI for enduring service.
For divers, this award signals reliability and trustworthiness. It also demonstrates the rich history of diving in the Cayman Islands. When you choose to learn or dive with operators recognised by global standards, you’re choosing a partner who understands safety, professional growth, and guest experience.

Red Sail Sports and Tortuga Divers: A Shared Heritage in Grand Cayman Diving
Red Sail Sports first opened its doors in 1987. Over the years, it has grown into one of the Caribbean’s premier dive and watersports operators, welcoming hundreds of thousands of guests and expanding scuba participation worldwide. Rod McDowall estimates Red Sail Sports has increased the rolls of scuba divers worldwide by about 50,000 people during its first 25 years in business.
In 2001, Red Sail Sports invested in creating Tortuga Divers at Morritt’s Tortuga Club and Resort on the East End of Grand Cayman. Drawing on Red Sail’s dive experience, philosophy, and access to a huge range of high-quality equipment and machinery, Tortuga Divers has since become one of our island’s top choices for personalised, professional diving experiences that emphasise safety and enjoyment.
Whether you’re visiting Seven Mile Beach with Red Sail Sports or exploring the best coral reef dive sites in Grand Cayman with Tortuga Divers, you’re benefiting from decades of collective expertise in dive operations, customer service, and underwater education.

Why Grand Cayman Dive Training and Courses Matter
Part of what the Longevity Award recognises is a strong foundation in diver education. PADI’s training framework is respected worldwide for its structured progression, safety focus, and clarity, all qualities that benefit divers visiting Cayman’s diverse array of sites.
At Tortuga Divers, this tradition continues with a range of Grand Cayman diving courses designed to fit your experience and goals. These include:
- Discover Scuba Diving — Ideal if you’ve never been below the surface but want a safe, guided introduction in shallow waters.
- PADI Open Water Diver — The foundational certification that lets you dive with confidence anywhere in the world.
- Advanced Open Water — Build on your skills with deeper dives and specialty experiences.
- Speciality Courses — Such as Night, Wreck, or Deep Diver, which add new capabilities and broaden your underwater horizons.
Together, these courses prepare you for everything from calm reef dives to more adventurous walls and wrecks, all while enhancing both enjoyment and safety.

Grand Cayman is the Perfect Place for Dive Training
Grand Cayman’s dive conditions make it an excellent training ground. The warm, clear Caribbean waters offer tranquil reef sites for early learners and exhilarating walls for more advanced divers. With consistent visibility and generally gentle currents, our island home is welcoming to divers progressing through their PADI training.
On the East End, Tortuga Divers takes advantage of this ideal setting. From structured pool sessions to open-water training dives, the environment supports confident skills development. Many divers who start with entry-level courses here go on to explore Cayman’s deeper reefs, night dives, and speciality adventures.
The award earned by Red Sail Sports reflects the long-standing reputation of dive centres in this region, a reputation shared by Tortuga Divers, where experienced instructors guide you every step of the way.
