Guide to Night Diving in the Cayman Islands

Night diving is an unforgettable experience that unveils the ocean’s hidden wonders after the sun sets, and Grand Cayman’s East End is one of the best locations for these after-dark adventures. The reef transforms into an entirely new world, illuminated only by your dive light. While daytime dives in Grand Cayman’s East End reveal the vibrant colours and movements of marine life, night dives expose a more mysterious, intimate side of the ocean, where nocturnal creatures emerge.

Tortuga Divers is based in the stunning East End, and we offer a safe, guided Grand Cayman night dive for adventurers eager to explore the underwater world in a whole new light. Whether you’re an experienced diver or new to night diving, our team ensures a thrilling and immersive experience.

In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about night diving in Grand Cayman, from why it’s a must-do to what you can expect when diving with us. If you have any questions for our team, please just get in touch for the answers you need.

What to Expect on a Night Dive with Tortuga Divers

At Tortuga Divers, we take pride in offering one of Grand Cayman’s most exciting night dive experiences. Our Grand Cayman East End Night Dive excursion takes you to some of the best sites along our island’s east coast, where the reef comes alive under the cover of darkness.

So, what can you expect during your night dive experience with us? Your tour will unfold as follows:

  • Pre-Dive Briefing – We meet at our dive shop at Morritt’s Tortuga Resort dock to go over the dive plan, safety procedures, and what marine life you can expect to see.
  • Gearing Up – We provide top-quality dive gear for your tour for an additional fee, including powerful dive lights to help you navigate the underwater world.
  • The Descent – As the last light of day fades, you’ll descend into the darkening water, with your dive light revealing an entirely different perspective of the reef.
  • Exploration – Follow your guide as we navigate the reef, watching as nocturnal creatures emerge, corals bloom, and tarpon hunt in the glow of our lights.
  • Return to the Boat – After 45 to 60 minutes underwater, we slowly ascend and return to the boat, where warm towels and refreshments await.

Please note that this dive is for certified divers only. However, in Grand Cayman, you do not need the PADI Night Diver specialty to enjoy a night dive with us. You can join with only an Open Water certificate.

But if you want to enroll in the PADI Night Diver Specialty course anyway, you can do so with our parent company, Red Sail Sports. The course includes three dives over three nights. Please contact us if you have any questions about booking this course.

  • Lobsters and Crabs – These crustaceans are far more active at night, scuttling across the reef in search of food.
  • Moray Eels – Often spotted slithering through the reef under the cover of darkness looking for food.
  • Tarpon – Large silver fish that often hunt at night and shimmer beautifully under the glare of dive lights.
  • Coral Polyps Feeding – Hard corals extend their polyps at night, transforming the reef into a soft, waving garden.
  • Bioluminescent Plankton – A truly magical experience if you’re lucky enough to encounter the right conditions! Wave your hand in the water and watch as tiny organisms light up around you.
